The challenge in Cameroon

What the figures say

8.4%of the road network is paved: 10,226 km out of 121,873 km. Most of the municipal network is unpaved.Ministry of Public Works (MINTP), interview with the Minister in Cameroon Tribune · data as at 31/12/2023 · source ↗
28.4%of rural households have access to electricity, compared with 87.6% in urban areas.INS, Fifth Cameroon Household Survey (ECAM5) · published 30/04/2024 · source ↗
56%of the rural population has a basic drinking water source, compared with 82% in urban areas.WHO/UNICEF JMP 2025, pS-Eau country profile · 2025 · source ↗

Rural production is held back first by isolation and by the lack of reliable water and energy. This infrastructure is beyond the means of an individual producer: it requires collective planning led by municipalities and farmer organisations.
