The challenge in Cameroon

What the figures say

17.7%of the maize harvest is lost after harvest, about 261,000 tonnes.APHLIS, cereal post-harvest losses, Cameroon · 2021 estimates · source ↗
11.2%of the rice harvest is lost after harvest, about 23,400 tonnes.APHLIS, cereal post-harvest losses, Cameroon · 2021 estimates · source ↗
56.3%of the rural population lives below the poverty line, compared with 21.6% in urban areas (2022).INS, Fifth Cameroon Household Survey (ECAM5) · published 30/04/2024 · source ↗

A large share of the harvest is lost between field and market because drying, storage and collection are not organised. Every tonne saved is direct income for rural households, most of whom are poor.
